Jesuit Refugee Services
Jesuit Refugee Service (“JRS”) is an international Catholic organisation, founded in 1980 as a work of the Society of Jesus (“the Jesuits”). JRS accompanies, serves and advocates for refugees and people seeking asylum and other forcibly displaced people in our own country. These people face destitution, limbo and homelessness as Government policy grows increasingly unwelcoming and punitive. JRS offers dignity and hope through emergency assistance, temporary shelter, a foodbank, professional casework, community activities, employment support, school engagement, legal advice, targeted advocacy, and a project to empower women seeking asylum.
The Social Justice Group held an event with JRS Australia for Refugee Awareness week on 22nd June 2021. Almost 80 people attended an insightful evening with an inspiring talk from Magdalene, an asylum seeker from Sierra Leone. The evening was made even more special when Naz, another asylum seeker in the audience, had the courage to stand up and share her story with us of her life in detention and today in Sydney. It was deeply moving for everyone who heard their stories. It was clear that both Magdalene and Naz are incredibly grateful for the support and love they receive from their communities in Australia. However, their plight is a difficult one with no certainty for their future due to current policies.
If you can assist our refugee community in any way, it would make a huge difference. Below are a couple of ways you could help:
JRS and The St Vincent de Paul Society published short briefing documents on a few of the key issues facing people seeking asylum. These are attached below.

If you can assist our refugee community in any way, it would make a huge difference. Below are a couple of ways you could help:
- Talk to your family and friends to help raise awareness of the issues facing refugees and asylum seekers in Australia.
- Join the Holy Name of Mary (HNOM) Hunters Hill Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS) Food and Essentials Drive to provide food for refugees and asylum seekers in need. Essentials include rice, pasta, oil, tuna, long life milk, nappies and toiletries. You can drop off items at the verandah of the HNOM Hunters Hill Parish office (3A Mary Street) on Wednesdays between 9am and 11am.
- Join the HNOM Social Justice Group. Contact Michael Cooley, 0410 542 781, [email protected]
- Join a local JRS action Group. Contact Zoe Grant at JRS, [email protected]
- Provide employment. Do you know someone that is hiring people? A good way to support refugees and asylum seekers is by providing them with employment. Contact Tamana Mirzada at JRS, [email protected]
